Massage with Reiki

Reiki is a Japanese technique for stress reduction and relaxation that also promotes healing. It is administered by "laying on hands" and is based on the idea that an unseen "life force energy" flows through us and is what causes us to be alive. If one's "life force energy" is low, then we are more likely to get sick or feel stress, and if it is high, we are more capable of being happy and healthy.

Chose from either a deep tissue massage or a relaxation massage, and the therapist will add the Reiki healing technique during your treatment. See Reiki description below.

KMI-Structural Integration (Massage) With Linda Harmon

KMI is a bodywork process which focuses on creating balance and ease in the connective tissues (fascia).  This helps to promote a sense of freedom in movement as well as reduce pain and strain in the body.  Fascia can be described as "the organ of form which gives us our shape".  While not technically an organ (such as the heart or lungs, e.g.), the ways in which we move our bodies create recognizable and habitual patterns in our fascia.  Have you ever been walking down the street and noticed a friend coming your way and been able to tell who it is even before you see their face?  For instance, maybe one shoulder is higher than another or there is a tendency to be really bouncy on the feet or perhaps the person favors one side of their body.  It is the connective tissues which hold these patterns in place.

Fascia is a matrix of fluid and fiber which connects us from head to toe, front to back, side to side and outer to inner. You can think of it as a body stocking.  When we learn anatomy, we learn the different parts of the body (e.g. the muscles, tendons and bones).  The truth is, that muscle-tendon-bone is continuities of connective tissue, which have different proportions of fluid and fiber.  All of our muscles as well as individual muscle fibers are supported by fascia and as muscles near their bony attachments, they become the fibrous structures we call tendons.  As tendons find their connection to our bones, we notice that the basic fluid and fiber recipe now includes some mineral salts as well to make what we know as "bones".  The important thing to remember is that we are literally one continuous whole person, not just a collection of parts.

When we practice yoga, sometimes we notice imbalances from side to side (e.g. in Triangle Pose) or front to back (e.g. maybe it is easier to forward bend than back bend or vice versa).  This is most likely due to the ways in which our connective tissues hold us together in our unique, fabulous bodies.

In the KMI process, I work with my clients to ease the restrictions in their fascia which may be causing discomfort or strain.  I talk with people to find out what their particular needs and goals might be, do a body reading assessment (to see if a hip is higher than the other or do they carry their weight more on their forefoot, e.g.), do hands-on myofascial work to free up the restricted areas and, in some cases, offer some movement tips on how to make the hands-on work more effective.

I have been practicing KMI since 1999 and it is my pleasure to bring this transformative bodywork to Centerville Yoga and Wellness.
