Yoga is an umbrella term that encompasses a group of physical, mental and spiritual practices which originated in India over 5,000 years ago. In Sanskrit, yoga roughly translates to "unite", "join", or "yoke", as in harmonizing the body, mind, and breath. This is done primarily through various breathing exercises (pranayama), yoga poses (asana), and meditation.

Increasing studies support yoga to be an effective complementary intervention for cancer, schizophrenia, osteoporosis, asthma, heart disease, anxiety, and depression, among other medical conditions.
